| "Conquest"
addresses the issues of our natural world and human interactions with
all life and resources. I spun the yarn from dog and cat fur, and my hair,
that I collected over a period of years. I wove the yarn into the chicken
wire forms. Jeanne McGivor helped complete the weaving of the female figure.
Other materials are cement, turmeric (yellow stain), metal shavings, used
car oil, and a beaker of water that is hanging from the ceiling. The cat-headed
woman is flying towards it with her single goose wing as a symbol of our
most precious resource- clean water. The bright red, dyed cloth gloves
are open to interpretation. I was thinking of blood on greedy hands creeping
out from society (so heavy!) but they are also reminiscent of coral formations
and other bright plant forms that appear in the desert…"Conquest"
implies the imperial mode of operating, yet while creating this work,
I was contemplating, incorporating and connecting with the intangible
value of all the natural materials and spirited life forms on the planet.
